Hand Painted Kitchens UK - HPKUK Ltd

Finsbury Park Kitchen

These colourful Finsbury Park Kitchen Cabinets were a shiny gloss red laminate, that would make most people think… unpaintable! However, this proved to be a ‘walk in the park’ for our Islington based, specialist kitchen painter Lorna. With years of experience transforming a variety of high end and hand-made kitchens, Lorna can instantly identify the necessary preparation and correct specification of paint for all types of kitchen cabinet doors and surrounding surfaces.

Painting shiny gloss surfaces

Preparation! Preparation! Preparation and Primer! The emphasis on preparing a kitchen like this cannot be understated or under estimated. Every inch of every surface requires thorough and meticulous prep! A mechanical key needs to be formed to enable the primer to adhere to the surface, failing to do this is preparing to fail!

Lorna uses a variety of specialist abrasives, these can range from a heavy /course aggressive grit (120g) to a very fine (2000g). Choosing the right grit (g) for the right surface is where the experience and knowledge comes in. If the grit is too course the surface will become scoured which can show through the subsequent layers of paint to be applied. If the grit is to fine, the mechanical key may not be enough to enable the paint to grip the prepared surface. Finsbury Park Kitchen

Choosing the right primer?

For this type of surface Lorna would use an alkyd based high adhesion primer that adheres well to difficult surfaces like glass, tiles, glass fibre, melamine, PVC-plastic, aluminium, zinc-coated sheet metal and surfaces coated with alkyd and acid-curing paint. Finsbury Park Kitchen

Once all the prepared surfaces are primed, then the primer has a very fine de-nib with another type of abrasive before the first top coat is applied. The chosen colour was the equivalent match to Farrow and ball ‘Stiffkey Blue’. A very popular colour for kitchen islands but not one you see regularly on all the main kitchen units. This deep inky blues is often used to create a richly dramatic space with a more contemporary finish. Lorna’s choice of colour to this Finsbury Park Kitchen created quite a dramatic contrast in conjunction with the bright white stone work surfaces and much to the delight of a very happy client.

” Lorna did an amazing job painting our kitchen. We moved in recently and I was not happy with the red glossy kitchen. Lorna has been super prompt replying to my email and giving us an estimate. She was also helpful in suggesting different colours according to what I wanted. Lorna worked while we were away and the kitchen was not only better than expected when we came back , but also super clean with no trace of paint /dust at all. Strongly recommend, thank you very much ! “
