This particular enquiry for a kitchen makeover Malaga came through our HPKUK website, following a thorough internet search from a lovely lady called Conchi, who was looking to employ the services of a professional kitchen cabinet painter to update her existing country kitchen to something a little bit more rock and roll. After a very pleasant and friendly conversation via email to establish the initial requisites of the enquiry, I swiftly forwarded this information over to Sam…
Sam is very much a hands on person and her passion for anything related to painting kitchens is inspirational. Sam even asked if she could write a guest blog on behalf of HPKUK on her account of this kitchen makeover Malaga… so here goes, take it away Samantha:
Kitchen Makeover Malaga by Sam Bayley
A Little Less Country And A Bit More Rock And Roll
Hand painted repaint of a country style kitchen in a mid 19th century building in the historical center of Malaga.
This project was done on behalf of Hand Painted Kitchens UK (HPKUK).
Conchi wanted something a little less ‘country’ without the upheaval of having it all changed & a more ‘dynamic, less fussy’ look
The apartment has been fully reformed by Conchi and the kitchen had been custom built for her. Fifteen years on she was ready for a change and to refurbish her original investment.
Her kitchen now has the dual function of cook’s kitchen and somewhere relaxed yet stimulating in which to work.
During lockdown it became her home office as the modem is right behind the breakfast bar & is therefore the BEST WiFi location in this lovely apartment. This is super-important to a busy Malaga University Professor still continuing to lecture online!!
The kitchen has traditional high ceilings & windows so plenty of natural light – choosing the darker toned blue/grey facing the light source added a little #modern touch without being over bearing.
The touch of blue sits very nicely with the floor tiles
this was a custom made colour designed specifically to pick out the Moorish blue decor tile. Conchi hadn’t considered having two colours in her kitchen but loved the idea at our first consultation. The Bank of units sits separately from the rest of the kitchen and faces the natural light source.
French Grey gave definition to the remaining cabinets & got away from the aged ‘yellow’ that glazed units can get over time.
With a hint of more green than grey it creates the most relaxed of rooms and the perfect backdrop for the pop of colour the Blue Bank provides.
New fridge & freezer were supplied by Joe Bayley, which are taller & so the cupboards above were modified & 4 new glazed doors made to match the existing cabinet doors. kitchen makeover Malaga
New brushed aluminium knobs & sleek handles were fitted too – we carried out several repairs to catches on doors and replaced some worn hinges. I also capped the visible screws inside all the cabinet boxes, amazing how often this isn’t done even at the initial installation years ago. Maybe a minor detail but a finishing touch nonetheless.
Doors and drawer fronts were refinished in my workshop, the remaining panels, extractor hood, cornice etc were refinished onsite over a period of 3 days – I did nip back a fourth time to check over the cooker hood and fret work as this had required some repair work and a multitude of artists brushes to gently get the filler into the details.
I work with dust-free sanding tools and my work area is carefully masked and protected for the duration of the onsite part of the project. Here it was important to have a roll-back system on the worktops so that Conchi could continue to use her kitchen each evening as I left.
There’s a touch of elegance to it with a new #colourpalette
I count myself very lucky to have worked for such a lovely lady, a delight to see every day and incredibly busy motivating and helping Malaga University students. Amazing to see up close just how were are all having to adapt in 2020!
