Should You Paint or Replace Your Kitchen Cabinets?
Before you decide on the painted option, first analise the “bones” of your existing kitchen cabinets to make sure they are in a stable enough condition to be painted. Chipped or cracked wood or water damage are obvious warning signs that they might need to be replaced, not painted. Additionally, if the cabinetry does not function well enough for you and your family to use, you may want to also consider replacement. However, if you determine your cabinets are in good condition but simply need a revamp, you are a prime candidate for cabinet repainting. Our specialist kitchen painters can advise usually from photograph’s, should you be unsure as to the overall condition for painting. Minor damage, general scuffs and chips to the wooden surface can be repaired prior to painting.
This particular project to a 15 year old mid oak kitchen was in Neath, Port Talbot… and the home town for Ian, our specialist kitchen cabinet painter Swansea.
So what’s the process?
Firstly, you should forward some pictures to us here at HPKUK. We can then give you an close indication of cost; in most cases an on-line quotation, based on the pictures supplied. However, because this job was in Ian’s home town, he carried out an on-site survey and supplied the client directly with a quotation.
A start date was agreed and booked into the dairy; several weeks later the works began (our kitchen painters get very busy and its not unusual for them to be booked anywhere between 8 to 12 weeks in advance). Worth bearing in mind if your project involves booking in other trades, should you be thinking; new worktops, tiling or flooring.
Ian arrived at the agreed time and began by removing the doors and draws; these were numbered in sequence for re-fitting purposes. Ian will either take the doors away or paint them on-site, depending on the space available. Every inch of every door, draw, frame, cornice and end panel is then meticulously cleaned with a degreaser and abraded to provide a mechanical key for the paint to adhere too.

All surrounding areas such as worktops and flooring are masked off and protected during the whole process; followed by a high grip primer, which is then applied to all surface areas. Once the primer has dried and lightly sanded, two full top coats of specialist furniture paint are applied in the colour of your choice. You can also chose from a 10% or 30% sheen level; in this project the chosen colour was the equivalent to Farrow & Ball Pavilion Grey in a 30% sheen.
To finish off the clients new look kitchen, painted in this classic mid grey colour; Ian replaced the door pull handles with some new brushed stainless steel ones. Looks absolutely great! Kitchen cabinet painter Swansea
